When you think about movies, you automatically think about subtitles. Some people can miss out on good movies because they lack subtitles. If you want to help them or make a name for yourself, you could try creating your own subtitles. With a large number of tools and features, Aegisub can make this possible. The application is quite flexible and it provides everything you need to create well synchronized subtitles.

A slow connection might keep you waiting while downloading the 21 MB setup file. Once you have it on your hard drive, it will take only a few moments to install the software. Aegisub is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Unix and you can find a portable version as well.

The interface contains a large number of options and you will occasionally work on separate windows as well, but this should not discourage you. If you want to create subtitles, you can load a movie and start right away. The options which may intimidate you at first will prove to be very useful later on.

Aegisub comes with a built in media player, which lets you edit your subtitles as you watch the movie. The media player is located in the upper left part of the window and you may type your translations next to it. Subtitles are created and edited as separate text fragments. Once created, a text fragment will appear in a list, on the lower part of the window, along with a few details, like the start and end positions and its style.

You can use the media player's controls to jump to a specific frame in the video and click different options to mark the start and end positions for a selected text fragment. A secondary Play option lets you watch only a segment of the video, which contains the selected text fragment. When you are done, you may click a check icon, in the subtitle editing area, to commit your text line and create a new one.

The media player includes a series of options, which make it possible to move, rotate or scale the subtitles, with click and drag actions. You can find many more editing options, in the same area, which can be used in a similar fashion. It is also possible to use command lines, in the subtitle editing area, to adjust their size, position and more. The software lets you define and save your own styles as well. This is done on a separate window, where you may select a font, color, position, scale and much more. If you create your own styles, you will be able to select them from a drop menu and apply them instantly, while editing subtitles.

Pros

Aegisub provides a huge number of features, which can be useful for timing your subtitles to a video or audio playback. It takes only a few minutes to figure out how the interface and its core functions work. You can define your own styles and apply them instantly.

Cons

The large number of options may intimidate inexperienced users. Aegisub gives you the possibility of creating subtitles like a professional. It offers everything you need to create, edit or synchronize subtitles and much more.
